Always very happy when my friend Mayté Alonso offers a job, my first idea was to do some good research in the library to absorbe a real historical atmosphere. So tell me, which years are these… ? So many things could be narrowed, i can only encourage you to go and watch « Une histoire de fou » on it’s release in 2015. A precious value.

Everything had the uniform color of frost
In late February for your last moments
And that is when one of you said calmly
Happiness to all Happiness to those who will survive
I die with no hate in me for the German people
Farewell grief and pleasure Farewell roses
Farewell life farewell light and wind
Get married be happy and think of me often
You who will remain in the beauty of things
When everything will be over later in Yerevan
A great winter sun lights up the hill
How beautiful is nature and how broken is my heart
Justice will come on our triumphant footsteps
My Mélinée, O my love my orphan girl
And I am telling you to live and to have a child
(excerpt from The Red Poster by Louis Aragon, inspired by the last letter written by the resistant Missak Manoukian to his wife Mélinée before his execution February 21,1944)

Working on a politically oriented film production just around the presidential election period of 2012 is good luck for those of us who still have hope. Together with my dear friend, the head make-up artist Mayté Alonso, we installed a false nose every morning over 5 weeks, enabling the actor Aurelien Recoing to play three different characters. We also used different colored contact lenses, false dentures and hair pieces and our work included the make-up of all the other actors and actresses. A great challenge that confirmed « yes, we can! ».

A historical reconstitution of Picasso’s stay in Montmartre Paris along with his friend, the poet Carlos Casagemas. The filmed sequences portray his first days in Paris in 1901 and his acquaintance with Germaine who went on to become his muse, and her friends. A terrifying end for this friendship marred by the suicide of Casagemas who had fallen in love with Germaine and was bitterly disappointed by her indifference. Picasso will later enter his ‘Blue Period’ expressing all his sadness. After the week of shooting this film, i made just enough for some groceries and a few fine patisseries for my children, however happy to say ‘ thanks to Picasso’…

What a sad story, the life of the political thinker and embittered poet Edouard Drumont. Here we can see that anti-Semitism was not only characteristic of Germans… I prepared all the hairdos, wigs and hairpieces 1870 -1900 and also became a fan of Denis Podalydès.

I recall a brief and very intense assignment on this production. Despite the hard working conditions, I enjoyed the enthusiasm, humor and imagination of it, managing to create all sorts of hairdos and make-up for characters in the flick of my magic wand. Working with this young, dynamic and very imaginative crew was a great pleasure. Characters in photos: Louis XIII, the buffoon, Nosferatu and the Viking.

« You’re not going to do that, are you? » I can still hear my companion saying, when i decided to create these effects with my friend Flo. Evidently, the art of make-up is not always something pretty to look at. It serves the purpose of the film, a story and makes us ask questions. On technique: Here i persuaded my friend to use gentle gelatin instead of those costly professional products. And Flo cleverly kept the hot plates right on the set. A very successful collaboration it was.
