Make-up and hair: 17th century. Excellent period piece, and wonderful teamwork : 14 professional make-up artists and hairdressers prepared the whole cast of soloists, choristers, actors and dancers.

Mozart in his entire splendor produced by Gérard Mortier, one of the most passionate and committed opera festival directors. Let’s leave the beautiful curls and listen to the magic of this production. Booed at its Palais Garnier premier, it’ wasn’t understood by it’s public. Later on, Gerard Mortier and Jean Louis Martinelli together took over reproducing it at Amandiers Theater. The audience was completely thrilled every evening. Backstage joy and harmony were overflowing, just the way we should live every instant of our passing lives. Mozart, what a sacred spirit you are!

During this delightful production we made the acquaintance of a joyful troupe, a cross between Piccolo Teatro and baroque circus: The Theater of the Zarzuela of Madrid. Zarzuela, in Spain is also the name for a very tasteful dish, and one of the rules to be a member of the company, could it be to be bon vivant?

One of my favorite opera. While working on this project, I was fortunate to assist Marie Pierre Bureau du Colombier, head of the Make-up and Hair department at the Chätelet. For this production all the cast needed to look like the living dead, representing a tyrannized population. We used a mixture of clay, watercolor and gelatin to obtain an effect of strangeness, rather than gore. It was a very good choice, and it did well under the excellent stage lighting.

Beneath each witch’s wig, we had to prepare charming ballroom hairdos for the rapid transition between Act I and II. Besides those technical saltimbanque details, did you know that pronouncing the name ‘Macbeth’ on a theater set brings bad luck? So, to ensure a successful performance, everyone must call it ‘the Scottish Play’.

Wow! Fanny Ardant directs an operetta! A little jewel, musically and visually speaking. I was moved seeing one of the first ladies of French Film and Theater directing the actors and singers with so much enthusiasm. Unfortunately I lacked the time to take more photos, but there is a DVD and if you like you can catch it online. I’m sure you would love it…
